Driving In France

When driving in France you will experience the contrast of quiet country roads and hectic city centres. You will find that diving in France is not that different from driving in the UK, with the obvious exception of driving on the other side of the road. However, you should familiarise yourself with the following information.

  • Drive on the right hand side of the road.
  • You must carry a warning triangle.
  • Wearing a seatbelt in both the front and rear is compulsory.
  • Children under the age of 10 are not allowed to sit in the front.
  • You should not drive with side lights on at any time, always use your main headlamps.

If you are using your right hand drive car in France then you have to adjust the angle of your lights, this can be done using stick on covers. Visit our LHD cars page for more information on the range of left hand drive cars we can source for you.

French Speed Limits

In France the speed limits are reduced during wet conditions, this is shown by the second figure in the list below:

  • Motorways - 130/110 km/h (81/69 mph)
  • Dual Carriageways - 110/100 km/h (69/62mph)
  • Other roads - 90/80 km/h (56/50mph)
  • Built-up areas - 50 km/h (31mph)

We also recommend that you read the “Code de la Route”, the French Highway Code, to help you understand the road signs and markings.

Our LHD car section shows the wide variety of left hand drive cars we can locate and deliver to your door.
